Four Huskies Medal At European Championships

University of Washington Dominates in Europe

Four University of Washington rowers earned medals Sunday on the final day of action at the 2020 European Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland.

Six of the eight UW athletes involved in the regatta rowed in A finals, with four of them finishing in a medal position. Tabea Schendekehl (pictured, alongside Simon van Dorp) stroked the German women's eight to the silver medal while her former Husky teammate, Chiara Ondoli was the stroke rower in the Italian four, which also won silver.

In the men's eight A final, two UW rowers – van Dorp and Bram Schwarz – helped guide the Netherlands to the bronze medal.

in addition to those four, two UW women's rowers competed in A finals for Italy, with Valentina Iseppi taking fifth in the quad sculls and Carmela Pappalardo finishing sixth in the women's pair.

In men's action, UW alumnus Viktor Pivac of Serbia won the B final in the men's pair, good for seventh place overall, while Ivan Piton of Croatia finished third in the men's four B final.

Schendekehl and her German eight spent the first half of the race in third place, behind Romania and the Netherlands, but the Germans crossed the halfway mark just one-tenth of a second back of the Dutch and caught them in the third 500. Romania held on for the win.

In the men's eight final, the powerful German crew led the entire way, with the Dutch and Romanians fighting for second. The Netherlands eight held the silver medal position for the first 1,000 meters, but were overtaken before the 1,500 by Romania, which held on to take second.

Ondoli's Italian four sat in third place for the first three-quarters of its final, with crews from the Netherlands and Ireland in first and second, respectively. But the Italians turned in the fastest final 500 split of the race to beat the Irish to the finish by about four-tenths of a second. The Dutch took first place.
